The ARIB Essential Patent License covers digital broadcasting receivers and digital broadcasting services.
Digital broadcasting means the following five types of broadcast waves:
- BS digital satellite broadcasting;
- CS digital satellite broadcasting;
- Digital terrestrial broadcasting;
- "One Seg" broadcasting for mobile devices;
- Digital terrestrial audio broadcasting (Digital radio).
The ARIB Essential Patent License does not cover devices for digital cable television, which are covered by the CATV Essential Patent License.
Manufacturers or distributors of digital broadcasting receivers, and providers of digital broadcasting services are required to obtain the ARIB Essential Patent License.
If a company outsources the manufacturing of digital broadcasting receivers to a third party, and the receivers are sold under the company’s brand, then the party which attaches the brand will be primarily required to obtain the license.
Essential Patents* relating to reception and transmission of digital broadcasting are licensed.
| * | Essential Patents mean the patents which are essential for manufacturing of the products or transmission services that satisfy the standards devised by the Association of Radio Industries and Businesses. |
