License Terms

Scope of License

  • The CATV-UHDTV Essential Patent License covers receivers and services for UHDTV cable broadcasting (generally known as "Cable 4K/8K").

Who are required to obtain the UHDTV Essential Patent License?

  • Manufacturers or distributors of receivers for UHDTV cable broadcasting (generally known as "Cable 4K/8K"), and service providers of UHDTV cable broadcasting (generally known as "Cable 4K/8K") are required to obtain the CATV-UHDTV Essential Patent License.

  • If a company outsources the manufacturing of receivers for UHDTV cable broadcasting (generally known as "Cable 4K/8K") to a third party, and the receivers are sold under the company’s brand, then the party who attaches the brand will be required to obtain the license.

Licensed Patents

  • Essential Patents relating to reception and transmission of UHDTV cable broadcasting (generally known as "Cable 4K/8K") are licensed. Please refer to FAQ for further information.

  • Please refer to the page Essential Patent Portfolio for details regarding the patents to be licensed.

Royalty

  • The rates indicated in the table below shall apply, depending on the type of license.

    • 1) UHDTV cable broadcasting receivers

The following rates shall apply, depending on the type of broadcasting waves receivable:

    • ① Receivers that can receive UHDTV cable broadcasting wave (generally known as "Cable 4K/8K") only

    • 100yen/unit

    • ② Receivers that can receive both UHDTV cable broadcasting wave (generally known as "Cable 4K/8K") and the

    • digital cable broadcasting wave (generally known as "Cable 2K") that are covered under the CATV Essential

    • Patent License.

If the total royalty amount, calculated by adding the royalty amount applied to each type of the digital cable broadcasting wave (generally known as "Cable 2K")based on the CATV Essential Patent License (the “CATV Royalty”) to the royalty amount of ① above, exceeds the “Total Royalty Cap” listed in the table below, then the amount, calculated by subtracting the CATV Royalty, from such “Total Royalty Cap” shall apply as the royalty amount.

Receivable digital cable broadcast wave (generally known as "Cable 2K") other than UHDTV cable broadcast wave (generally known as "Cable 4K/8K") Total Royalty Cap
Transmodulation Method (including the Re-Mux Method) only 180 yen/unit
      Pass-through Method only 180 yen/unit
Transmodulation Method (including the Re-Mux Method) and Pass-through Method 220 yen/unit
    • NOTE: If the total royalty amount, calculated by adding the CATV Royalty to the royalty amount of ① above, does not exceed the “Total Royalty Cap”, then the amount as listed in ① above is to apply.

    • 2) UHDTV cable broadcasting services

    • The royalty calculated for each service, based on the following formula, shall apply.

      • (Royalty) = (Revenue for UHDTV cable broadcasting services) x (Contribution Ratio) × 1%

      • NOTE: “Contribution Ratio” means the ratio of contribution of the licensed patent in the service.

    • Royalties for any case other than set forth above shall be separately determined.

    • Royalties shall be payable at the rates above for the period on or after April 1, 2015.

    Duration of License Agreement

    • The license agreement shall take effect retroactively on the first date of the quarterly period that includes the date of agreement execution (the three-month period that begins on either January 1, April 1, July 1, or October 1), and shall remain in force until June 30, 2028.

    • The license agreement shall be automatically renewed for every five years unless otherwise notified six months prior to the expiration date.
