License Terms

Scope of License

  • The Satellite-UHDTV Essential Patent License covers receivers and services for UHDTV satellite broadcasting generally known as "4K/8K".

  • UHDTV satellite broadcasting means the following two types of broadcasting waves:

    • Advanced wideband satellite digital broadcasting;

    • Advanced narrowband CS digital broadcasting.

Who are required to obtain the UHDTV Essential Patent License?

  • Manufacturers or distributors of UHDTV satellite broadcasting receivers, and providers of UHDTV satellite broadcasting services are required to obtain the Satellite-UHDTV Essential Patent License.

  • If a company outsources the manufacturing of UHDTV satellite broadcasting receivers to a third party, and the receivers are sold under the company’s brand, then the party which attaches the brand will be required to obtain the license.

Licensed Patents

  • Essential Patents (please refer to FAQ page for further information) relating to reception and transmission of UHDTV satellite broadcasting are licensed.

  • Please refer to the page Essential Patent Portfolio for details regarding the patents to be licensed.

Royalty

  • The rates indicated in the table below shall apply, depending on the type of license.

    • 1) UHDTV satellite broadcasting receivers

The following rates indicated in the table below shall apply, depending on the type of broadcasting waves receivable:

    • ① Receivers that can receive UHDTV satellite broadcasting wave (generally known as "4K/8K") only

Receivable UHDTV satellite broadcasting wave Royalty
Advanced wideband satellite digital broadcasting only 200 yen/unit
Advanced narrowband CS digital broadcasting only 100 yen/unit
Advanced wideband satellite digital broadcasting AND
      Advanced narrowband CS digital broadcasting
      300 yen/unit
    • ② Receivers that can receive both UHDTV satellite broadcasting wave (generally known as "4K/8K") and the digital broadcasting wave (generally known as "2K") that are covered under the ARIB Essential Patent License.

If the total royalty amount, calculated by adding the royalty amount applied based on the ARIB Essential Patent License (the “ARIB Royalty”) to the royalty amount of ① above, exceeds the “Total Royalty Cap” listed in the table below, then the amount, calculated by subtracting such “Total Royalty Cap” from the ARIB Royalty, shall apply as the royalty amount.

Receivable UHDTV satellite broadcasting wave Total Royalty Cap
Advanced wideband satellite digital broadcasting only 300 yen/unit
Advanced narrowband CS digital broadcasting only 250 yen/unit
Advanced wideband satellite digital broadcasting AND
      Advanced narrowband CS digital broadcasting
      300 yen/unit
    • NOTE: If the total royalty amount, calculated by adding the ARIB Royalty to the royalty amount of ① above, does not exceed the “Total Royalty Cap”, then the amounts as listed in ① above are to apply.

    • 2) UHDTV satellite broadcasting services

    • The following services are covered:

      • ① Advanced wideband satellite digital broadcasting services

      • ② Advanced narrowband CS digital broadcasting services

    • The royalty calculated for each service, based on the following formula, shall apply.

      • (Royalty) = (Revenue for UHDTV satellite broadcasting services) x (Contribution Ratio) × 1%

      • NOTE: “Contribution Ratio” means the ratio of contribution of the licensed patent in the service.

    • Royalties for any case other than set forth above shall be separately determined.

    • Royalties shall be payable at the rates above for the period on and after April 1, 2015.

    Duration of License Agreement

    • The license agreement shall take effect retroactively on the first date of the quarterly period that includes the date of agreement execution (the three-month period that begins on either January 1, April 1, July 1, or October 1), and shall remain in force until June 30, 2022.

    • The license agreement shall be automatically renewed for every five years unless otherwise notified six months prior to the expiration date.
