License Terms

Scope of License

  • The IPTV Essential Patent License covers receivers and services for the optical fiber cable IP broadcasting (using generally known as "Content Delivery Network").

  • Internet video distribution is not applicable.

Who are required to obtain the IPTV Essential Patent License?

  • Manufacturers or distributors of receivers for the optical fiber cable IP broadcasting (using generally known as "Content Delivery Network"), and service providers of the optical fiber cable IP broadcasting (using generally known as "Content Delivery Network"), are required to obtain the IPTV Essential Patent License.

  • If a company outsources the manufacturing of receivers for the optical fiber cable IP broadcasting (using generally known as "Content Delivery Network") to a third party, and the receivers are sold under the company’s brand, then the party who attaches the brand will be required to obtain the license.

Licensed Patents

  • Essential Patents relating to reception and transmission of the optical fiber cable broadcasting (using generally known as "Content Delivery Network") are licensed. Please refer to FAQ page for further information.

Royalty

  • The rates shown below shall apply, depending on the type of license.

    • 1) Optical fiber cable IP broadcasting receivers


      Receivable IP broadcast Royalty
      (1) For IPTV Receiver (STB) that receives terrestrial digital broadcasting and / or BS 2K satellite digital broadcasting re-transmission services 100Yen/Unit
      (2) For IPTV Receiver (STB) that receives the re-transmission service of BS 4K satellite digital broadcasting 100Yen/Unit
      (3) For IPTV Receiver (STB) that receives both services (1) and (2) above 180Yen/Unit
      (4) For IPTV Receiver (STB) that receives only IPTV-2K normal service (*) other than (1) to (3) above 50Yen/Unit
      (5) For IPTV Receiver (STB) that receives only IPTV-4K normal services (*) other than (1) to (3) above 50Yen/Unit
      (6) For IPTV Receiver (STB) that receives both services (4) and (5) above 90Yen/Unit

      * Normal service means services other than terrestrial digital broadcasting, BS 2K satellite digital broadcasting, and BS 4K satellite digital broadcasting, such as VOD service and independent broadcasting service.

      • 2) IPTV broadcasting services

      • The royalty calculated for IPTV service, based on the following formula, shall apply.

        • (Royalty) = (Revenue for IPTV broadcasting services) x (Contribution Ratio) × 1%

        • NOTE: “Contribution Ratio” means the ratio of contribution of the licensed patent in the service.

      • Royalties for any case other than set forth above shall be separately determined.

      • Royalties shall be payable at the rates above for the period on and after April 1, 2015.

      Duration of License Agreement

    • The license agreement shall take effect retroactively on the first date of the quarterly period that includes the date of agreement execution (the three-month period that begins on either January 1, April 1, July 1, or October 1), and shall remain in force until September 30, 2026.

    • The license agreement shall be automatically renewed for every five years unless otherwise notified six months prior to the expiration date.
