  • ULDAGE Inc., the patent pool license administrator, is pleased to announce that, SKY Perfect Entertainment Corporation, a CS 4K digital television broadcaster, and ULDAGE, after long-held negotiations, have executed license agreement for essential patents relating to CS 4K digital television broadcasting.
Advanced Narrowband CS 4K digital television broadcasting which started in Japan in March 2015 and Advanced Broadband CS 4K digital television broadcasting which started in Japan in December 2018 (hereinafter collectively referred to as “CS 4K digital television broadcasting”), is provided in conformity with the commonly known as ARIB Standards established through discussions among the participating members of The Association of Radio Industries and Businesses (ARIB). The Standards reflect technologies, suggestions, and ideas of numerous broadcasters, device manufacturers, and other concerned parties, and consequently, there is a wide variety of patent holders involved in such technologies, and a large number of essential patents are also involved.
Unless appropriate measures are taken to tackle this kind of complex patent issue, the standards themselves or the growth of CS 4K digital television broadcasting business itself could be negatively affected.
ULDAGE was established in July 2006 in order to resolve such patent issue and promote the growth of the digital television broadcasting system by gathering various essential patents relating to digital television broadcasting in one place and then licensing them as a package through the commonly known as patent pooling method.
At present, ULDAGE has pooled approximately 660 essential patents held by 19 patent holders. Under the CS 4K digital television license program intended for receivers, which was implemented back in 2017, 85 licensee companies manufacture and sell such devices, and the program has contributed greatly to the establishment of the environment for the promotion of the CS 4K digital televisions which are capable to receive high resolution 4K digital television broadcasting in addition to existing 2K digital television broadcasting.
Digital television broadcasting cannot be realized unless both ends exist: the broadcasters which send signals that comply with the ARIB Standards and the television receivers which receive such signals. Consequently, ULDAGE has long pursued negotiations with the representatives of the television broadcasters to materialize the license program for digital television broadcasting. The recent execution of license agreements with a CS 4K digital television broadcaster, following the license agreements with 129 terrestrial digital television broadcasters concluded in March 2013, as well as those with 19 BS digital television broadcasters concluded in September 2015, as well as those with 21 CS digital television broadcasters concluded in April 2018, and with 9 BS 4K digital television broadcasters concluded in December 2022, are groundbreaking in that the broadcasters will now reward the patent holders, namely, the developers of the relevant technologies, by directly bearing an appropriate proportion of royalties for the use of such technologies.
As a result, the broadcasters will be able to conduct their broadcasting businesses without any concern over the issue of CS 4K digital television broadcasting related essential patents pooled with ULDAGE. ULDAGE shall contribute to maintain the culture of fair sharing of royalties among the implementers.

In this digital age, it has become more and more necessary to resolve patent issues under fair and reasonable conditions by simplifying the complicated rights issues and the related complex procedures. ULDAGE currently operates licenses under the patent pool system that licenses those patents that have been gathered and bundled, and determined to be essential to the standards of high definition terrestrial digital broadcasting, high definition satellite digital broadcasting, high definition digital cable broadcasting, and ultra high definition satellite digital broadcasting respectively. ULDAGE is proud to have contributed to the smooth development of the industry. The establishment of a pool of this kind relating to the Cable UHDTV standards is also thought to be another contribution to the well-being of business operators that use these standards and to the development of stable business.

With this patent licensing, it is possible for broadcasters and receiver manufacturers to receive a license of bundled patents from a number of patent holders under very reasonable conditions. For example, with respect to receivers, the rates are set at 100 yen per unit, taking into consideration the development of the market going forward.

Furthermore, ULDAGE continues to make a call for patents and sequentially adds patents that have been recognized to be essential to the Cable UHDTV broadcasting standards, aiming for further reinforcement of the patent licensing.

Moreover, with respect to those patents relating to UHDTV standards pertaining to IPTV, ULDAGE is in discussions with the patent holders about the licensing terms and conditions, and ULDAGE plans to commence licensing activities through patent pools that are similar to this Cable UHDTV broadcasting pool.

  • ULDAGE Inc., the patent pool license administrator, is pleased to report that, up to today, following digital CS110 broadcasters and ULDAGE, after long-held negotiations, have executed license agreements for patents relating to digital CS110 broadcasting.

CS Nippon Corporation , C-TBS, Incorporated , Satellite Service , CS One Ten,Ltd. , InteracTV

    (in numerical order of channel)

Digital CS110 broadcasting, which started in Japan in March 2002, is provided in conformity with the so-called ARIB Standards established through discussions among the participating members of The Association of Radio Industries and Businesses (ARIB). The Standards reflect technologies, suggestions, and ideas of numerous broadcasters, device manufacturers, and other concerned parties, and consequently, there is a wide variety of patent holders involved in such technologies, and a large number of patents are also involved.

Unless appropriate measures are taken to tackle this kind of complex patent issue, the standards themselves or the growth of digital CS110 broadcasting business itself could be negatively affected.

ULDAGE was established in July 2006 in order to resolve such patent issue and promote the growth of the digital television broadcasting system by gathering various patents relating to digital television broadcasting in one place and then licensing them as a package through the so-called patent pooling method.

At present, ULDAGE has pooled approximately 680 patents held by 20 patent holders. Under the license program intended for receivers, which was implemented back in 2007, 151 licensee companies manufacture and sell such devices, and the program has contributed greatly to the establishment of the environment for the expansion of access to digital television in relation to the complete transition from analog broadcasting to digital broadcasting.

Digital television broadcasting cannot be realized unless both ends exist: the broadcasters which send signals that comply with the ARIB Standards and the television receivers which receive such signals. Consequently, ULDAGE has long pursued negotiations with the representatives of the digital CS110 broadcasters to materialize the license program for dugital CS110 broadcasting. The recent execution of license agreements with the digital CS110 broadcasters, following the license agreements with digital terrestrial broadcasters concluded in March 2013, and the license agreements with digital BS broadcasters concluded in September 2015, is groundbreaking in that the broadcasters will now reward the patent holders, namely, the developers of the relevant technologies, by directly bearing an appropriate proportion of royalties for the use of such technologies.

As a result, the broadcasters will be able to further their broadcasting businesses in a stable condition without any concern over the issue of digital CS110 broadcasting related patents pooled with ULDAGE.

As for this patent licensing, the following 16 entities holding the patents that have been determined by the Japan Intellectual Property Arbitration Center, a neutral organization, to be essential to the standards, have started the licensing through ULDAGE.

    (Listed alphabetically)
Dolby Laboratories Licensing Corporation, Fujitsu Limited, Hitachi Maxell, Ltd., JVC KENWOOD Corporation, LG Electronics Inc., MASPROH DENKOH CORP., Mitsubishi Electric Corporation, NEC Corporation, Nippon Hoso Kyokai (NHK), Orange SA (formerly known as France Telecom), Panasonic Corporation, Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd., Sony Corporation, The Trustees of Columbia University in the City of New York (Columbia University), Thomson Licensing S.A.S, and Toshiba Corporation.

In this digital age, it has become more and more necessary to resolve patent issues under fair and reasonable conditions by simplifying the complicated rights issues and the related complex procedures. ULDAGE currently operates licenses under the patent pool system that licenses those patents that have been gathered and bundled, and determined to be essential to the standards of high definition terrestrial digital broadcasting, high definition satellite digital broadcasting, and high definition digital cable broadcasting (also known as 2K broadcasting) respectively. ULDAGE is proud to have contributed to the smooth development of the industry. The establishment of a pool of this kind relating to the UHDTV satellite standards is also thought to be another contribution to the well-being of business operators that use these standards and to the development of stable business.

With this patent licensing, it is possible for broadcasters and receiver manufacturers to receive a license of bundled patents from a number of patent holders under very reasonable conditions. For example, with respect to receivers, the rates are set at 100 yen per unit in respect of advanced narrowband CS UHDTV receivers and 200 yen per unit in respect of advanced wideband UHDTV receivers, taking into consideration the development of the market going forward.

Furthermore, ULDAGE continues to make a call for patents and sequentially adds patents that have been recognized to be essential to the UHDTV satellite broadcasting standards, aiming for further reinforcement of the patent licensing.

Moreover, with respect to those patents relating to UHDTV standards pertaining to CATV and IPTV (for which calls for patents were commenced in April of this year), ULDAGE plans to hold discussions about the licensing terms and conditions once the holders of those patents have been determined, and ULDAGE plans to commence licensing activities through patent pools that are similar to this satellite broadcasting pool.

  • ULDAGE Inc., the patent pool license administrator, is pleased to report that, up to today, following
digital BS broadcasters and ULDAGE, after long-held negotiations, have executed license agreements
for patents relating to digital BS broadcasting.

Nippon Hoso Kyokai, BS Nippon Corporation, Asahi Satellite Broadcasting Limited, BS-TBS, INC.,BS Japan Corporation, FUJI SATELLITE BROADCASTING, INC., WOWOW INC., STARCHANNEL INC., Nippon BS Broadcasting Corporation, World Hi-Vision Channel, Inc., The Open University of Japan, The Green Channel, Animax Broadcast Japan Inc., BS-FOX, SKY Perfect Entertainment Corporation, J SPORTS Corporation, Fishing Vision Co., Ltd., IMAGICA TV Corp.,Nihon Eiga Satellite Broadcasting Corporation, Broadcast Satellite Disney Co., Ltd.
    (in numerical order of channel)

Digital BS broadcasting, which started in Japan in December 2000, is provided in conformity with the so-called ARIB Standards established through discussions among the participating members of The Association of Radio Industries and Businesses (ARIB). The Standards reflect technologies, suggestions, and ideas of numerous broadcasters, device manufacturers, and other concerned parties, and consequently, there is a wide variety of patent holders involved in such technologies, and a large number of patents are also involved.

Unless appropriate measures are taken to tackle this kind of complex patent issue, the standards themselves or the growth of digital BS broadcasting business itself could be negatively affected.

ULDAGE was established in July 2006 in order to resolve such patent issue and promote the growth of the digital television broadcasting system by gathering various patents relating to digital television broadcasting in one place and then licensing them as a package through the so-called patent pooling method.

At present, ULDAGE has pooled approximately 590 patents held by 18 patent holders. Under the license program intended for receivers, which was implemented back in 2007, 158 licensee companies manufacture and sell such devices, and the program has contributed greatly to the establishment of the environment for the expansion of access to digital television in relation to the complete transition from analog broadcasting to digital broadcasting.

Digital television broadcasting cannot be realized unless both ends exist: the broadcasters which send signals that comply with the ARIB Standards and the television receivers which receive such signals.
Consequently, ULDAGE has long pursued negotiations with the representatives of the BS broadcasters to materialize the license program for BS digital broadcasting. The recent execution of license agreements with the BS broadcasters, following the license agreements with digital terrestrial broadcasters concluded in March 2013, is groundbreaking in that the broadcasters will now reward the patent holders, namely, the developers of the relevant technologies, by directly bearing an appropriate proportion of royalties for the use of such technologies.

As a result, the broadcasters will be able to further their broadcasting businesses in a stable condition without any concern over the issue of digital BS broadcasting related patents pooled with ULDAGE.

  • ULDAGE Inc., the patent pool license administrator, is pleased to report that, up to today, the
respective digital terrestrial broadcasters, namely, each of the 127 members of The Japan Commercial
Broadcasters Association, Nippon Hoso Kyokai (NHK), and The Open University of Japan, and
ULDAGE, after long-held negotiations, have executed license agreements for patents relating to
    digital terrestrial broadcasting.
Digital terrestrial broadcasting, which started in Japan in December 2003, is provided in conformity
with the so-called ARIB Standards established through discussions among the participating members
of The Association of Radio Industries and Businesses (ARIB). The Standards reflect technologies,
suggestions, and ideas of numerous broadcasters, device manufacturers, and other concerned parties,
and consequently, there is a wide variety of patent holders involved in such technologies, and a large
number of patents are also involved.
Unless appropriate measures are taken to tackle this kind of complex patent issue, the standards
themselves or the growth of digital terrestrial broadcasting business itself could be negatively affected.
ULDAGE was established in July 2006 in order to resolve such patent issue and promote the growth
of the digital television broadcasting system by gathering various patents relating to digital television
broadcasting in one place and then licensing them as a package through the so-called patent pooling
    method.
At present, ULDAGE has pooled approximately 500 patents held by 14 patent holders. Under the
license program intended for receivers, which was implemented back in 2007, 161 licensee companies
manufacture and sell such devices, and the program has contributed greatly to the establishment of the
environment for the expansion of access to digital television in relation to the complete transition from

  • (DENVER, CO, US – 15 September 2009) – World leading patent pool licensing administrator MPEG
LA, LLC, and Japanese patent pool administrator ULDAGE Inc. today announced a cooperation under
which ULDAGE will offer MPEG LA’s MPEG-2 Systems License along with ULDAGE’s ARIB
license to companies based in Japan that sell mobile TV handsets for Japan’s One-Seg mobile
terrestrial broadcasting service. One-Seg mobile TV handsets use both the Transport Layer of the
MPEG-2 Systems Standard covered by MPEG LA’s MPEG-2 Systems License and the ARIB One-Seg
digital broadcast standard covered by ULDAGE’s ARIB License. Therefore, One-Seg handset
manufacturers need coverage under patents essential to both standards and would benefit from both
    licenses.

“This collaboration marks two firsts,” said MPEG LA President and CEO Larry Horn. “It is the first time
that two joint licensing administrators have joined forces. It is also the first time that a joint license has
been offered covering patents essential to multiple standards utilized in a single product. We are
especially thrilled to be able to do this with ULDAGE, whom we hold in the highest regard for its
successful licensing of the Japanese market. We share a rich history and common values serving our
customers and the market with licensing products of increasing convenience.”

“Doing this venture with MPEG LA holds special significance for us,” said ULDAGE President and CEO
Yoshihide Nakamura. “MPEG LA ushered in the age of patent pool licensing bringing new efficiencies
to the patent licensing market. Now together we usher in the age of product licensing. In response to
market demand, through the cooperative effort of our companies each representing the gold standard in joint licensing, we are bringing new licensing products to market that will benefit the industry and its
    consumers.”

One-Seg is a mobile terrestrial digital audio, video and data broadcasting service used in Japan.
ULDAGE’s ARIB Essential Patent License provides a license under Japanese Digital Broadcasting
Standards including One-Seg that were developed by the Association of Radio Industries and
    Businesses (“ARIB”).

The MPEG-2 Systems Standard defines how to format the various components of multiplexer programs and combine them into a single program or transport stream. Where the standard is used without licensed MPEG-2 video encoders or decoders, such as in One-Seg handset and other mobile television and audio receivers and certain set-top boxes and cameras, MPEG LA’s MPEG-2 Systems Patent Portfolio License
    provides coverage under essential patents.
